The performance and number of processes for a "depmod -a" with gzipped modules was abysmal. This patch adds a code path without fork, benefiting all users of xmalloc_open_zipped_read_close. "modinfo radeon.ko.gz", a single-file reader, got 30% faster. "depmod -a", which used to fork over 800 times, got 20% faster. Search harder for the ZIP magic numbers at the end of a file by checking 16 KiB from the end instead of just 1 KiB. ZIP files with long comments (such as certain cryptographically signed files) or those sitting in a wrapper could have more than 1 KiB of data after the magic numbers, so they couldn't be read.
