Even GNU don't pretend they're still on 1970s terminals where ` and '
were a matching pair any more.

More consistent tense, capitalization, and punctuation. A few commands were
missing an introductory line, so I copied those from the first comment
line.

right in years (ubuntu broke its' vim implementation). Remove trailing spaces. Add/remove blank lines. Re-wordwrap in places. Update documentation with new coding style.
The actual code should be the same afterward, this is just cosmetic refactoring.
